Why Volunteer?

When asked why s/he has chosen to pursue volunteering many potential volunteers find this hard to express.

There are many reasons why someone decides to make time to volunteer. The catalysts can be personal, professional, community or society driven. Motivation trends change and evolve over time.

It is important for individuals, non-profit organizations and volunteer centres to understand what motivates volunteers because this affects the success of the future mutual experience. Motivations determine how, why, when and where volunteers are most fulfilled, and are therefore most effective in their chosen voluntary positions. A positive volunteer experience in turn leads to the success of community services and programs.

Individuals (and groups) volunteer to:

  • Experience personal growth, learning and satisfaction
  • Pursue professional growth and development
  • Create employment skills
  • Expand his/her professional network
  • Enjoy social interaction / meet new people
  • Master a new language
  • Learn about a new society, country or community
  • Fulfill a sense of empathy / connection with a "cause"
  • Be a part of positive change in their community
  • Have fun
  • Build personal empowerment and self-esteem
  • Instill a value of giving and caring
  • Complete education or work experience requirements

Volunteers

People with Hearts of Gold

Folks we honour.  Friends Indeed

Where in the world would our world be,

If it wasn't for volunteers?

Thank Heaven for people with hearts of gold,

They overcome all of our fears.

The folks that give freely of talent and time,

Who underwrite so much success,

In support of society's pillars of hope,

Their actions speak volumes we bless.

Policing, firefighting and Block Watch, too,

Draw spontaneous people who care,

And amateur sports of every description,

Helped by folks with great spirit out there.

Medical research and Charity groups,

Reach unbelievable goals that are set,

When people believe in the value of giving,

And work to be sure goals are met.

Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies all show the way,

Respect for life and law at an early age,

And folks of all ages share the Spirit of BC,

As they volunteer at life's center stage.

A commitment of neighbour helping neighbour,

Drawn together like never before,

Is a goal of the new Langley Volunteer Bureau,

Inspires events and volunteers to unite more and more.

Volunteers.  People with Hearts of Gold,

Your ideas, your energy, your skill,

Your participation and commitment to sharing,

Assures good things happen, and they will.

Volunteer Langley Spirit of BC is new here this year,

Leaders will make all citizens happy and proud,

We plan to train and retain scores of new volunteers,

A most important part of the crowd.
